I'm a crazy Mario fan. But also, I adore The Punisher, from Marvel Comics; I've got a very big collection of this character, which includes a lot of comic books, video games and the two last movies (War Zone kicks ass). Nintendo and Marvel Comics are way too different universes, but since I'm a huge fan of both companies' works, I always wanted to mix them up.
Appreciating both Mario and the Punisher, I just needed an excuse to mix up their universes. That's when I heard (and eventually watched) Super Mario Momotarō. This is the first one of the Super Mario anime series, and it's based on the Japanese fairy tale Momotarō. The story is considered to be totally separated from the rest of the Marioverse, since it's just a version of Momotarō and changing everything up in the Mario series was a need; this resulted in two elderly Hammer Bros. being grandparents to Princess Peach, Mario being born from inside of a giant peach (the fruit) and using a freakin' MACHINEGUN. No, there isn't any machine-gun in the original Momotarō, so I really don't know what those guys from the animation team had in mind. I'm not complaning, though.
Add to it the band he wears on his head and the association of Mario with the symbol of a peach, and you'll have a true kickin'-ass, Koopa-punisher Super Mario.
The background was taken from the original Super Mario Momotarō. Dry Bowser and Dry Bones don't appear in the anime, but I based this whole drawing on the cover for The Punisher #28 (Streets of Laredo, part 1) made by the glorious Tim Bradstreet; the picture features human skulls being aimed by a gun, and I wanted to be loyal to it, so it's like if Bowser was alive, but we're actually seeing only his skull, representing death. Download it for bigger resolution. The logotype was also based on the Punisher's logo, his skull being replaced by Super Mario Momotarō's peach. Roy Koopa is in the background.
Well there IS a gun in the animation: [link] reach the 1:05 mark. You can clearly see a submachine gun which is given to Mario, so I don't really understand what you're saying. And I'm glad you like the pic, thank you!
Yeah, now you're right! He uses it in the end of the episode, but just to poke Bowser's tail. That's plenty weird! I don't know what developers had in mind when they gave life to the submachine gun concept. There isn't even anything related to that in the original Momotaro stories.
Yeah, its a weird thing...to be honest, the whole 'outer space empire' thing wasn't in the originals either, and didn't even occur in the Mario universe 'till Galaxy, so that setting choice strikes me as even weirder.
Actually, the Outer Space concept appears for the first time in the Marioverse in 1989, with the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! episode "Star Koopa" (that parody of Star Wars, complete with a Darth Koopa, a Stormtroopa and a Koop Star); then, I remember Mario went out to space in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins — specifically in the Space Zone. Then, we've got Super Paper Mario, whose 4th chapter leads the plumber to the Outer Space. Back to Super Mario Momotaro... that episode is one of the most randomic things I've ever seen in my whole life!
Yeah, though I'd like to say that I don't count Super Show as being in continuity, I don't know anybody who played Super Mario Land 2 (Though I'm sure someone played it), and Super Paper Mario, again, I don't count to be in continuity. Which makes Galaxy the first popular Mario game in continuity, not only featuring but entirely set in outer space. (Space isn't just a zone in Momotaro, the whole thing is set in a galactic setting, recall)
Yeah, for me the randomness award goes to either that or Luigi's inexplicable Cavarly Moment at the end of Snow White (Which was awesome, but still extremely random given that he hand't been introduced in any way beforehand).
Yes, I usually split the media in the Mario series in different continuities. Sometimes I feel like the Marioverse could be just like the Marvel Universe — adequately separated into different realities, named with numbers or whatever.

That said, good pic!

That said, while he does have a gun, he never bothers using it. Weird, huh?
And you're welcome!
