Grate Guy's Casino

Description

This drawing is a mix between Jan Majetko's "Stańczyk" and elements surrounding Grate Guy's Casino from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

Please read. This took me almost one week to finish, and several insomniac hours. This is my half of an art-trade with the awesome ~rock-paper-mario, onde of the greatest Mario fans who shares the same level of knowledge about Mario than I have. We're both contributors to MarioWiki, and she goes as far as having the Japanese instruction booklet for Super Mario RPG, including the MOST rare pictures of the game that you can't find ANYWHERE around internet. She scans some of those goodies for me and generates great Mario fanart, mostly centered in two specific little guys: Knife Guy and Grate Guy from Super Mario RPG, the two amazing jesters known in Japan as the Clown Bros. As a response to a very good Killer Nicky White© drawn by her, I've made not only Grate Guy, but a picture of this guy's entire Casino.

Did you ever heard about Stańczyk? He was the most famous court jester in Polish history. This drawing is HEAVILY based on a picture of Stanczyk made by Jan Majetko (you NEED to click on that link). In Majetko's portrait of Stanczyk, the jester is the only person at a royal ball who is troubled by the news that the Russians have captured Smolensk. I wanted the Grate Guy's Casino to be exactly like Jan Majetko's Stanczyk.

So you can notice a huge lot of customized similarities. The environment, the curtains, the window, the floor, the shadows, the sitting jester, the table, the things on the table, the background, the five people at the ball (althought I see six people in Majetko's paiting, I purposely reduced the number to five in order to represent all the five heroes of Super Mario RPG), and an object in the ground (turned into Grate Guy's ball). I wanted to be loyal to both things: Majetko's portrait of Stanczyk, and Grate Guy's Casino. Please, compare between those three elements, including the final result, submitted above, and tell me your thoughts about it. This is also the very first time I draw Grate Guy, Geno and Mallow.

Dude I came across this pic browsing the internet for cool grate guy pics and this is one of the 1st to come up. I absolutely love what you did with him here. By reading your story how you blended a classic painting from one of your fav artists and combining with something modern you absolutely killed it. I'd like to see more of your work and share some of mine on here as well. I know you did this 10 years ago so I hope you're still around. I always told my friend about this amazing game I'd play on snes and he surprised me one day downloading an emulator and now we both play all the time.Mario RPG will never die! Top top notch drawing my friend
